This was only the second ever meeting between the clubs the previous one being in a Surrey Senior Cup tie back in November 1936. Before the game there was a minutes silence ahead of remembrance Sunday. The match itself saw us suffer our first home league defeat of the season, in the opening half we had a strong wind in our favour but sometimes that can work against you. Chances were at a premium although we had a couple of reasonable ones Frankie Sawyer was through on goal but Mark Fox in the Town goal made a good block and Howard Newton fired wide when well placed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was the visitors who took the lead in the 46th minute when Guy Harding headed home from a free-kick. We then put on a lot of pressure and Billy Marshall had a shot cleared off the line and Dan Summers went close. With us pushing for an equaliser the visitors were dangerous on the break and Sam Schaaf missed a gilt edged chance to put the visitors two up. Then Jon-Paul Collier had a shot saved by Paul Smith. We then had another effort cleared off the line and you knew it was going to be one of those rare days when we were not going to score. To make matters worse Howard Newton was shown a red card in the 83rd minute. In the 90th minute Ben Chick went on a fine solo run for Town and fired just wide. Credit must be given to the visitors who did a good job on us to take the points. Team: Smith, Jelley(Nkoma), Gordon, Knock, Gonsalves, Alimi, Newton, Quarm(Pinnock), Summers, Sawyer, Marshall. Not used: Hartburn, Khan and Badiali(gk). Match report by: Ian Bullock |

We returned to winning ways beating a depleted Hythe Town team by two goals to nil at the KNK Stadium. Our opening goal came in the 34th minute from the outstanding Nathan Gordon following a fine solo run which saw his deflected shot beat Roddy Hayward in the visitors goal. Town looked dangerous on the break with former Gillingham striker Ashley Miller a constant threat. In first half stoppage time we had a chance to increase our lead when we were awarded a penalty after Dan Summers was brought down in the area. Leading scorer Dan Summers stepped up but saw his spot-kick well saved by Roddy Hayward. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Straight after the break the Kent side went close when Dave Pilcher saw his fierce drive well saved by Luke Badiali making his debut in the Terrors goal. At the other end Frankie Sawyer fired just over. In the 50th minute Ashley Miller went close with a free-kick for Town. Five minutes later Dan Summers saw his free-kick pushed around the post by the keeper, from the resultant corner Dan Summers headed home at the near post. Man of the match Nathan Gordon then went on an amazing run beating several town defenders. We then created further chances with Howard Newton firing wide and the unlucky Frankie Sawyer having another good effort saved. In the closing stages Ryan Philpott and Ashley Miller had chances for Hythe and Dan Summers nearly added a third for the Terrors beating two men and firing just over. Team: Smith, Badiali, Jelley, Gordon, Knock, Gonsalves, Alimi, Newton, Quarm, Summers, Sawyer, Marshall(Pinnock). Subs not used: Hartburn, Nkoma, Khan, Smith(gk). Match report by: Ian Bullock |

Sawyer 2(1p) |
Our first big game since working our way into the playoff positions ended in a 3-2
defeat at the hands of a solid Merstham team. We were on the back foot from the off
as we struggled to get any meaningful possession, and it wasn’t long before Luke
Badiali was called into action to palm a powerful long distance shot away. Our attacks
were few and far between as we failed to get our passing game going. A tame shot
from Summers which was comfortably gathered was our only noteworthy effort in the
first 30 minutes. Our defence was finally breached on 25 minutes when a corner was
nodded in by Okoye, who was seemingly unchallenged in the 6 yard box. There were
some complaints that perhaps our goalie had been impeded, but they fell on deaf ears.
Our equaliser came somewhat against the run of play a few minutes before the break.
Dan Summers, playing in a much deeper role, knocked a ball into the channel and Frankie
Sawyer managed to get behind the defence to pick it up. His first touch seemed to
take the ball a bit wide, but a beautiful clip sent the ball across the keeper and
into the net. We came out a bit stronger in the 2nd half and evened up the midfield battle. In
fact we probably had the better of the chances, albeit long range efforts. However,
it was Merstham who re-took the lead on 64 minutes when another corner was headed
home, this time by Gunner who had appeared at the far post. There was barely time
for us to regroup when a sloppy pass in midfield went astray and a lightning counter
attack left Hutchings in the clear to extend the lead just a minute later. To our
credit we didn’t buckle, but we did find it hard to get beyond the Merstham defence
who had pace and size in their armoury. We had a good chance to pull one back when
a shot from Pinnock was parried into the air, and during the subsequent melee there
appeared to be a bit of barging off the ball, but again the ref had other ideas.
We did get a penalty after 85 minutes when Sawyer was tripped. Sawyer picked up the
ball and did the honours himself as he sent the keeper the wrong way. We managed
to apply some pressure in those last 5 minutes but Merstham employed enough nouse
to run the clock down. The home side will probably feel that they deserved the 3
points, but we can feel reasonably happy with the way we responded in the 2nd half,
although not the manner of the the goals conceded. Match report by: endofthelane |

Sawyer |
158 brave souls endured a miserable night of constant heavy rain but, given the conditions, were rewarded with a good contest on a pitch that stood up pretty well. Tooting were still without the suspended Newton and the injured Graves with Badiali continuing in goal. And the Terrors would end up relying on their keeper to secure a valuable away point. The Terrors could have got off to the perfect start when after just 6 minutes Summers slipped the ball through to Sawyer in the inside right channel. This was just the sort of chance he has been converting with ease in recent matches but on this occasion Fagan came out quickly to block well with his body Suddenly the break was at the other end with a similar ball slid through to BUGIEL inside the box who took a controlling touch and slotted home. Disaster. Hendon then stopped the marauding Jelley down the right, earning himself a talking to from referee Lowe. Soon after Pinnock received a long diagonal ball but it took him too wide for a decent finish. The dangerous Bugiel created another chance when he pulled off the back four to receive, turned and drove forward at our back four but the receipient of his pass shot wide. Mr Lowe was called in to action again when Heath dived in to a midfield challenge
with every stud on his boots clearly visable. Even allowing for the conditions he
was fortunate to escape with just a yellow and perhaps it was poetic justice when
he was forced off shortly afterwards with injury from his efforts. Pinnock floated
in the free kick which resulted in a half chance and then a half shout for a Tooting
penalty. Gordon was cut down on the halfway line after cutting inside on one of his
mazy runs but the referee was perhaps unimpressed by his Italian style multiple rolls
in the mud and the Worthing player escaped punishment ------------------ The second half started with Worthing seemingly determined to get Sparks away down the wide left against Jelly. They frequently packed the right hand side and then switched play quickly, getting others up in support with some effect. Tooting were still driving forward through the mud to create their own chances.
Worthing had a good chance in the last quarter when an intercepted Terrors midfield
pass was taken down the left and driven across goal. Defenders were throwing themselves
in all directions to block but the final shot blazed wide. Both teams were doing their best to ignore the awful conditions and pressing hard for the goal and 3 valuable points in a game that was becoming increasingly open as the players understandably tired. Substitute Richards crossed from wide left to the head of Bugiel drawing a fantastic tip over save from Badiali. Then Sawyer broke down the middle and keeper Fagan, charging yards outside his box, did really well to stay on his feet and get the ball clear.
Points shared and all credit to the players for producing such an entertaining match
in difficult conditions. Team: Smith, Badiali, Jelley, Gordon, Knock, Gonsalves, Alimi, Marshall, Quarm, Summers, Sawyer, Pinnock Sub: Nkoma Subs not used: Simpson, Aiken-Simon, Sebuliba, H Cheadle(gk). Match report by: Bondy |
